10.30 SharePoint one year on – What was the organisational impact?

Jones Lang LaSalle one of the largest commercial property managers in the world has now come full circle with its SharePoint installation. Over a year ago, we first heard of the deployment challenges they were facing trying to cover such a wide range of diverse markets and countries. One year later they returned to complete their case study with the lessons learned and benefits realised.

Powered by SharePoint – A 21st Century Information Service

Leatherhead Food Research, an independent organisation delivering research, scientific consultancy and regulatory guidance to the food industry worldwide, implemented a SharePoint solution for their company intranet in 2007. Since then they have added to SharePoint's features to produce specialist web-based subscription services such as their Regulatory Guides, making the most of SharePoint's editing and workflow systems. Lessons learnt, in terms of planning, set-up and follow-through, have been many, and some of the benefits, costs and future potential for the business were considered in this case study.
Tamsin Kelly, Leatherhead Food International

Managing and delivering critical information assets

Diabetes UK's goal was to design an information system that would comprehensively manage the charity's information resources – both corporate information worked on internally and healthcare information sent externally.

Having had multiple, fragmented information systems over the years, Diabetes UK decided that they needed to take a holistic view of their information management requirements – these included documents, records and content and communications. To this end, they decided that the MOSS 2007 platform would be the ideal choice for them.

One of the business goals of the new system was that it should be user friendly and sustainable in both it's technology and information design. To this end, they took particular care to build an information architecture that was as politically neutral and long-lived as possible whilst remaining usable; the Charity was also keen to make MOSS 2007 as accessible as practicably possible.
Richard Coombe, Diabetes UK

13.45 SharePoint in the education world

SharePoint in Higher Education

James has been working with a team from Northumbria University on a study investigating the use of Microsoft SharePoint in HEIs. The project has been funded by Eduserv and is taking place July-November 2009.

The aim is to enhance HEIs understanding of SharePoint solutions and also Eduserv's understanding about their uptake and usage in order to influence Eduserv's 2-3 year plans for service provision. The project consists of a brief literature review, a phone survey of a sample of UK HEIs, case studies of a small number of HEIs who are using SharePoint, and an online public consultation. James presented key findings from the research to date.

From pilot to success

South Nottingham College is a general Further Education college with a wide range of further and higher education courses and training opportunities. A pilot of SPS 2003 was run across the business support side of the organisation and three academic areas. A decision to move to MOSS allowed the college to invest £60k to develop a new system and allocate responsibilities to existing and new staff in the college to implement MOSS. This case study examined how the college has successfully evolved the MOSS offering to include all students and staff and demonstrated how it is possible to achieve a great deal on a relatively small budget through sound planning and effective team management that engaged with all stakeholders within the college.
Elaine Martin, South Nottingham College

15.30 SharePoint at the heart of the organisation

Reorganising around SharePoint

The University of Western England originally had rather modest aims for their small SharePoint implementation. However, early success and ease of implementation meant that a number of projects began with a quick win. With these under their belt, the University has moved on to develop more strategic applications in teaching and administration. They first built a simulation suite for law students and are now using a SharePoint add on to model the University's business processes.
Peter Gilbert, University of West England
