"We are definitely going through interesting times" – the Chinese version. The business press is full of advice about
how to ride out the economic downturn and prepare for recovery. 'Strategy', 'planning' and 'tactics' certainly make
up the message.
We are picking up on the 'strategy' message at our next Connect meeting, with the theme, 'Fit for purpose: KIM
strategies that make a difference'. This event, which includes input from three practitioners, has proven to be
of particular interest; it was fully booked within 48 hours of details being circulated to members. We are maintaining
a waiting list so do let us know if you would like attend.
Recently, I have been struck by how much we take information and knowledge management, as part of our daily lives,
for granted. Just listening to the news – Obama's first one hundred days, swine flu, troops withdrawing from Iraq,
blow-by-blow accounts of the state of the economy – we are receiving information collated, analysed and transmitted
from a vast range of sources. Increasingly, we are hearing that 'we' have learnt from previous experience (as in
the case of swine flu building on the experience of SARS), or that 'we' failed to learn or apply good practice (for
example: the recent alleged failures to protect children at risk). Why do we think it is difficult for KIM specialists
to demonstrate their value?
We look forward to meeting up with many of you at future professional meetings. Meanwhile, I hope that you enjoy the
next few months of summer - whatever the weather holds in store.

New service from TFPL Consultancy: e-Audit
Electronic environments bring many benefits and certainly facilitate speedy information sharing across boundaries.
As these develop, hidden issues are arising – increasing storage costs, information risk, invisible information assets and
poor control.
e-Audit has been designed to help organisations take a fresh look at their e-environments and to
implement good practice and governance. If you want to reduce storage and backup costs; develop records management
policies and meet legal obligations; ensure that you can find crucial documents and information when required; and
gain control of an ever-increasing mountain of information, why not take a look at our new service?

RMS Conference & Exhibition
TFPL exhibiting at the RMS Conference
TFPL exhibited at the Records Management Society Conference, held at the Hilton Metropole in Brighton on 19-21 April 2009.
Whilst budget restrictions appeared to limit the number of corporate attendees compared to previous years, the event nevertheless attracted roughly 350 delegates, with large numbers of representatives from local government authorities, government departments, non-departmental pubic bodies and universities.
We were joined on our exhibition stand by Richard Page from our Sharepoint partner, SFW. The threat/opportunity of Sharepoint to RM was a recurring topic within the technology section of the conference.

SharePoint Summit
SharePoint is certainly still a topic for debate in many organisations, and there are countless organisations seeking
to benefit in one way or another from SharePoint products and technolgies – as users, suppliers, trainers or consultants.
A search on Google for Microsoft SharePoint at the end of April bought up 4,240,000 postings within 0.15 seconds - so
it is still having an impact. However, as Elspeth Hyams said, when introducing the two recent articles in CILIP Update about
TFPL's 2008 SharePoint Summits, "Modern business life is littered with the fallout from bad IT implementations. So,
inevitably not all organisations think the SharePoint platform has met expectations".
Last year's Summits not
only explored the practical and business implications of deploying SharePoint but also included case studies from
organisations who had gained impressive results from the implementation.
We are running our fourth SharePoint Summit, date to be confirmed later on in the year. Visit the
TFPL website
for programme details and to book a place.

Cloud Computing
'Get inside the cloud of information' event
Held in March 2009, TFPL's Cloud Computing event continued one of ebic's future scenario discussions. It was a
stimulating day and set the scene for future TFPL events in 2009. A short summary of the event follows, and further information can
to be found on the TFPL blog.

"Professionals and institutions care about cost, reach, accessibility and the scalability of services. The cloud model
achieves all of these for them."
- John Sheridan, Head of e-services, The National Archives
Roger James, IT Director at the University of Westminster, set the scene for our recent Cloud Computing event with
the mantra: cloud computing - 'private data in public spaces - a leap of faith/a leap of fact'. Roger, who was
chairing the day, explained that anyone could be $10 and 10 minutes away from setting up a collaborative space in the
cloud and later provided a case study of the application at the University saying that "the adoption enabled us to
overcome the resistance to using institutional systems."
The event's keynote address was given by John Sheridan from The National Archives. Closely involved in the Power of
Information Task Force and Semantic Web initiatives, John provided an overview of the UK Government's interest in Cloud
technologies: its potential to provide cheap collaborative tools together with savings in the costs of storage and
infrastructure.
Two additional case studies illustrating the application of Google Apps complemented the example provided by
Westminster. Paul Driscoll, IT Director of the construction company Erith Group, piloted Google's online email and
desktop applications and described how remote access to cloud applications saved the company from "a disaster and,
in the long run, helped reduce costs". The application of Google Apps at The Guardian newspaper group was driven by
the need of journalists to collaborate within a very fluid organisation.
Lynn Collier, Director of Archive and Compliance Solutions at Hitachi Data Systems EMEA, reflected on the potential
economic model for the Cloud saying that "A key prerequisite to optimise cloud computing is to pinpoint where maximum
savings can be made based on a realistic and accurate understanding of the content", while
Jeremy Bentley, CEO of Smartlogic, discussed the approach to Information Architecture
within a Cloud environment.
The day included a lively interactive session and there was also plenty of 'twittering' taking place with a question
posed from someone who was reading one of the delegate's postings during the day on twitter.
In addition, a recent IWR article about cloud computing includes information from the event and is available online at
www.iwr.co.uk/information-world-review/features/2241171/capture-cloud.

ebic 2010
ebic 2010 will take place on 15-17 March at the Kempinski Hotel in Budapest and will continue the 'imagine' theme. This time we will be imagining the contribution of KIM to the
regeneration of the economy.
The hotel is outstanding - as some of you may remember - and Budapest is a wonderful city to visit. However, the real reason to attend
any conference is the quality of the programme and the opportunity to exchange ideas and experience with your peers.
ebic 2010 will include inspirational speakers and opportunities to work together on topics that are central to the
future of Knowledge and Information Management. It will be hard work, stimulating and fun. The date and venue have been fixed so make a note in your diaries.
Keep an eye on the
TFPL website for information as the programme develops.
"ebic offered a great opportunity to take a step back and discuss thought-provoking ideas of what the future holds for the Knowledge and Information market, and more importantly what steps need to be taken to get there. Also, I loved the inclusion of the Social Impact Award, and the attendance of the Fellows. Very inspirational."

TFPL Connect
The first TFPL Connect meeting of the year was a chance to share some impressions, thoughts and ideas from ebic 2008.

Professor Di Martin, CIO and Dean of Learning and Information Services, University

business value and people power respectively in a loose reflection of the green, blue and orange world scenario
planning sessions from ebic 2008.

Iain Simpson, Head of Commercial Insights and Digital Marketing,
BDO Stoy Hayward gave an entertaining presentation on the future
impact of technology, touching on the indicators for future trends introduced in the KeyNote presentation by
Paul Saffo, and predicting the death of email via social computing, surface
computing and data visualization. In the future, virtual worlds are a norm, and virtual conferencing will take off
with holographic technology. One of the sites which Iain used to illustrate his points was
www.Addictomatic.com which allows you to create an instant
web page on any topic. It searches 'the best' live sites on the web for the latest news, blog posts, videos and images.

New business delivery models were reviewed by Don Roll, Managing Director of Alacra,
Europe. Don delivered, in his view, a very "practical" and, in mine, a very engaging piece. He summarised the themes
which he saw as emerging trends, from ebic 2008:
- A shift to a more networked business-to-business model
- A demand and realisation for instant, relevant, information
- And a move towards relationship based taxonomy (ontology)

TFPL Connect is a learning network and we are pleased that the majority of participants stayed on after the formal
presentations to socialise. Both existing and new contacts made the most of the networking opportunity, and we are pleased that the move to
evening meetings makes it easier for members to come along.
More information about the TFPL Connect meeting can be found on the
TFPL blog.

"Most companies find it hard to transform themselves in difficult circumstances. Those that use proven tactics
markedly improve their chances of success."
– The McKinsey Quarterly, April 2009. Read the
full article here.
Picking up on the 'strategy' message which is very much a key theme in the current business press the topic of the
next Connect meeting is 'Fit for purpose: KIM strategies that make a difference'. This event will include input from
three practitioners who have developed and implemented successful KIM strategies and who will reflect on their
experiences. It will be an opportunity for participants to consider what makes for a successful strategy, to explore
ways to gain and keep management commitment in uncertain times, and to ensure that KIM is acknowledged as an essential
part of an organisation's infrastructure. As always there will be plenty of discussion and opportunities for networking.
We look forward to meeting you there.
Within 48 hours of releasing details the event was fully booked, so let us know if you would like to be added to the waiting list. If you
have reserved a place and find that you are unable to attend, please do let us know so that we can offer your place to
people on the waiting list.
Full details and the registration form are available on the
TFPL website.
Our Connect events are proving very popular, but please remember that numbers are restricted so you do need to book early in order to be sure of a place.
Our third TFPL Connect event in 2009 will be on 1 October 2009.

TFPL Recruitment
Luisa Jefford, Director of Recruitment, reflects on the current recruitment market.
TFPL Recruitment continues to find opportunities for candidates from a range of disciplines and with a wide spectrum
of information and knowledge management experience. For employers looking for talented people the candidate pool is
deep. However, candidates with an exceptional mix of skills are not on the market for long!

We are seeing changes and interesting trends in the employment market. The drivers for organisations looking to recruit
in this uncertain economy are essentially about business improvement - there is a definite swing away from information
and knowledge roles being mainly about 'support' to one where they are expected to make a positive contribution to the
business of the organisation and the bottom line.
Candidates who are in demand, are those who display a mix of both operational and strategic capability. The public sector
has remained a relatively buoyant area for KIM roles and we note a slow re-emergence of private sector roles. There also
seems to be a growing interest in salary reviews and comparisons as organisations restructure their approach to KIM and
their specialist teams.
In common with most professions, it is undoubtedly a difficult time for everyone in the KIM area. If there is one message
that the recruitment team would like to get across is that now is the time to really get to know the customer. This also
applies to candidates - potential employers really need to understand how the candidate will add value. This means a lot
of client research homework! It also applies to TFPL. Our clients are all dealing with changes and challenges and we
need to understand these in order to provide the best service. This is why we spend a lot of time visiting clients and
attending networking events. If developments have taken place within your organisation which you think we should take
into account when working with us, please let us know.

KM Framework Review for NHS Connecting for Health, (NHS CFH)
We have now completed our review, consulting with a wide range of people across the organisation and the wider NHS,
using the TFPL KM Health Check Process. The consultation was carried out by interviews, culminating with a senior
management workshop to determine which actions would have the biggest impact on knowledge sharing. We
recommended a KM framework with a number of activities, for NHS CFH to build on their existing KM initiatives.
Developing a single, central information resource for Diabetes UK
TFPL in partnership with SFW Ltd are working with
Diabetes UK to build an enterprise-wide solution to managing a
central information resource which will handle all file storage and deliver an integrated desktop/interface for all
users within the organisation.
Commenting on behalf of Diabetes UK, Richard Coombe, Head of IT, said
"After an extensive selection process Diabetes UK chose TFPL and SFW as they provided an ideal combination of
expertise in information management and understanding of the technology involved, which gave us the confidence that
they could deliver project success." TFPL Consultancy is very pleased to be involved with this exciting project and
the TFPL / SFW partnership has a very strong offering in this arena, bridging the gap between IT and IM business change
projects.

£8 million on research in 2009 as well as campaigning and providing information and support. During our 75th Anniversary
year, we hope you will be able to join in and support us so that we can carry on improving the lives of people with
Diabetes into the future. For more information visit

The Knowledge Management consultancy stream is thriving in this recession. This is due to
organisations recognising the risk of knowledge loss and the value of their own knowledge and experience to help them
survive global and national turmoil.
TFPL is receiving a growing number of requests for support in harvesting the
knowledge of leaving staff for use by their remaining colleagues; a process that requires diplomacy as well as
harvesting expertise. The TFPL Knowledge Management Health Check is proving its value as organisations rethink the
knowledge strategies they need to meet today's challenges. We are supporting the implementation of knowledge
management strategies in longer term partnerships with in-house knowlege management teams. For more information see:
Knowledge management: managing knowledge at risk
