Promoting Innovation in Healthcare - the place of Current Awareness Services in the NHS of tomorrow?
Innovation and quality improvement are central to the success of CCGs and to the future of a high quality and productive NHS. Today alerting services are delivered by some national NHS organisations (e.g. NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement) and a handful of dedicated NHS library and information professionals around the country. In the best tradition of 'Do Once And Share' they are often made available over a wider geography. Yet what is the future of these services through transition - when we know that some leading current awareness services come from organisations which are due to close down? We will hear first hand from some of these alerting services and it will be a really pivotal meeting to understand how knowledge and information services are being taken forward as the NHS goes through transition. Discussions will centre around:
This Health SIG meeting will identify some options, and take a view from some of the major national organisations as to what the position may be.

A very successful meeting was held in Leeds attracting over 20 attendees to continue discussion on the topic and have input from the north of England. The presentations given can be downloaded below along with the report of the meeting and discussions.

We held a very interesting meeting on the knowledge and information needs of GPs from commissioning and clinical requirements, chaired by Sue Lacey-Bryant (Associate Director of GP Consortia Development/Chief Knowledge Officer, Milton Keynes PCT ), attended by 35 delegates coming from a mix of information suppliers (including charities), IT providers and NHS library and information professionals. The meeting focused on the provision of social care information from SCIE and NHS Evidence and how the two organisations planned to develop information resources for social workers working for Local Authorities the NHS (where there focus was on social care), the voluntary and charitable sectors. Due to the very successful and informative meeting held in Leeds (12 October 2010), to look at how DH Informatics are taking KM tools and techniques out into the NHS to improve sharing of knowledge, experience and lessons learned, we decided to re-run the meeting in London for those in the south of the country to participate and hear the success stories. The format of this meeting was similar to the previous one, with the discussions building on the outcomes from the Leeds meeting, and chaired by Sue Lacey-Bryant, Associate Director of GP Consortia Development, NHS Milton Keynes. The meeting held in Leeds on 12 October 2010 was welcomed as an opportunity for those based in the region and nearby to participate in a Health SIG meeting.
