"I went to get some ideas with regards the introduction of information literacy/knowledge management into my organisation and came away with plenty of approaches and positive thoughts on the subject."

"The course was very useful & helpful - especially in the formulation of an action plan/method for assessment of customer needs & promotion"

introduction:

End users in small and large organisations alike are increasingly expected (or indeed expect) to operate as knowledge workers: accessing their information online with only minimal recourse to information and library professionals. However, they do not always make the most of the resources available to them, either because they are not aware of the full range that exists, or because they do not have the basic skills needed to use the resources to full effect. This course will equip delegates with a 'how to guide' for promoting information literacy for their end users, tailored to their particular organisational environment.

outcomes:

By the end of this course, delegates will have developed a 'how to guide' for promoting information literacy for their end users, tailored to their particular organisational environment. The 'how to guide' will include:

  • A reminder of the essential components for information literacy
  • Alternative approaches for educating end users and promoting information literacy
  • A set of tailored next steps along with supporting materials for the delegates to take away with them

programme:

Upon registering for the course, delegates will be asked to fill in a short questionnaire describing the nature of their organisation, the number of potential or actual knowledge workers, the supporting library and information infrastructure, and the status of information literacy within it. This will enable the course instructor to tailor the detail of the programme to best meet the needs of the delegates.
The programme will consist of:

  • A summary of the delegatesÂ’ organisational environments (based on the completed questionnaires)
  • Brief presentations with hand-outs to cover the essential components of information literacy, and the approaches for educating end users and for promoting information literacy
  • Interactive discussions to help delegates plan how to tailor what they have learnt into a series of next steps for their organisations
