TFPL information and knowledge management research
TFPL maintains its role as a leader in information and knowledge management through continual research into aspects of the topics. While much of our research is commissioned by private sector clients – and the outcomes remain confidential to them – we regularly undertake work sponsored by clients, or funded by public sector agencies, whose results are widely published.
TFPL has recently completed a major 'e-information roles' research project which set out to
improve the breadth and depth of understanding about information roles and responsibilities in the
current electronic information environment. From this research TFPL have produced a white paper called
Who's managing information? Information responsibilities in the digital world.
The paper presents a Framework of information responsibilities which will help:
- employers identify the responsibilities, roles and skills required to develop and sustain essential IM
practices;
- individuals assess and plan their careers.
This paper is available free of charge. To obtain a copy please visit our downloads page.
TFPL have also undertaken international research projects looking at the roles, skills and training required to create the knowledge environment and to implement knowledge
management within an organisation.
The first project was partially funded by the UK Library and Information Commission with additional funding from
the private sector to extend the scope and depth of the research.
This work has been published as ‘Skills for Knowledge Management.’
The second project looked at the information and knowledge skills that will be required by a variety of organisations in the private and public sector in the future and has been funded by the Information Services National Training Organisation. This has been published as ‘Scenarios for the knowledge economy: strategic information skills’.
TFPL has also researched the knowledge management approaches being undertaken within the pharmaceutical industry on behalf of PJB Publications Ltd. The resulting report ‘Mobilising Knowledge - the Pharmaceutical Industry's approach’ was published in February 2001. TFPL have also investigated the actions required at a European level to further the development a knowledge economy, and continue to work on international projects in this area.
In addition, TFPL undertook programmes of work in 2000 and 2001 to identify how business organisations were approaching the improvement of access to information and knowledge via taxonomies. This was published as ‘Taxonomies for business: access and connectivity in a wired world’ and ‘Information architecture: taxonomy in context’, however, these reports are now out of print.
