About the company


This is a fantastic opportunity to join an organisation whose interest and focus lies in the nations’ health and the provision of respective services throughout the UK. They are seeking to employ an Assistant Librarian until January 2021, who will contribute to the management and development of the Knowledge and Library services that support the businesses needs. This will also include managing staff and collections on site, as well as playing a role in the broader development of innovative digital and remote services.

What you will be doing

Management

•     To manage the knowledge and library service provided to staff, in line with overall management and policies

•     Line management of Library Services staff - currently one Assistant Librarian

•     To contribute to the strategic development of Knowledge &  Library Services, reporting to the Knowledge and Library Services Manager

General

•     To contribute to the review of Knowledge and Library Services, undertaking user surveys and audits as necessary, and adapting services as required in the light of changing user requirements and resources

•     To lead a programme of pro-active information science specialist support in novel and dangerous pathogens, vaccine research, emerging zoonoses and disaster management

•     To ensure that the content development needs of users are met, including the sourcing, selection and purchase of new online resources, books, journal titles, and other publications in a timely and cost-effective manner

•     To promote subject specialist sources to ensure their efficient exploitation, developing appropriate marketing and promotional activities

•     To meet location document delivery requirements, especially for Library users who have tight and high-profile deadlines to meet

•     To support the process of procurement of appropriate journal subscriptions and online access for subject specialisms, and ensure access to electronic resources, liaising  with service providers when necessary, or  IT for internal issues

•     To contribute to the development of induction and training programmes on Knowledge and Library Services systems and information literacy skills for staff, with responsibility for implementation for site users

•     To answer enquiries from both staff and external sources, in person, email and by telephone

•     To ensure the strategic and efficient use of library space, and liaise with Facilities, Operations and ICT staff where required

•     To ensure that Knowledge and Library Services on site conform with the principles of Data Protection and Copyright Legislation

Finance/Business

•     Manage the budget for Knowledge and Library Services where appropriate

•     Manage the administrative systems including the collection of service data and impact measures

Who you will be

  • A postgraduate qualification in a KIM related discipline such as Knowledge Management, Records Management, Information Science, Information Management or Library and Information Studies
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a special or academic library environment
  • Knowledge of a wide range of health care resources (beneficial)
  • Experience of LMS systems
  • An understanding of Copyright and Legislations relating to libraries
  • Knowledge of electoral journals and resources
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Experience of line managing staff
  • Good personal IT skills and demonstrated interest in the use of IT to deliver library and information services
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and commitment to professional development
